Brightly College Launches in Sri Lanka, and Pledges Future-Forward Learning to Create Global Citizens

Brightly College, led by celebrated educator, Andrew Fowler-Watt & Founded by the Design Corp Group of Companies Chairperson, Dr. Linda Speldewinde, is a new and unique A-Level educational opportunity for young Sri Lankans. The institution was officially launched at a press conference held on March 4, 2022, at the Colombo Innovation Tower, which will be home to Brightly College.

With a pledge to deliver a future-forward educational experience for Sri Lankan students aspiring to be global citizens, Brightly believes in creating a new learning culture tailored for the future; and to act as a launchpad for outstanding young people who are willing to take on tomorrow’s challenges with intelligence, commitment and leadership. Brightly will provide a stimulating learning experience that is crafted to provide a dynamic foundation of future-forward skills and qualities.

The press conference included an esteemed panel of speakers, including educators and leaders of industry, science and sport. The panel included educator, Cambridge graduate and Founding Principal of Brightly College (and former Principal of Trinity College Kandy, The British School in Colombo and CIS), Andrew Fowler-Watt; Entrepreneur, Dr. (Hon DCL) Linda Speldewinde, Sri Lankan Cricketing legend, Kumar Sangakkara, Marine Biologist and Founder of the Ocean swell Organisation, Dr. Asha De Vos, and Country Manager of Cambridge International Examinations, Ms. Panchalika Kulatunga.

Speaking at the event, Founding Principal of Brightly College, Andrew Fowler-Watt said, “The world first talked about STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Then it was about STEAM subjects (with the incorporation of ‘arts’). Now at Brightly College, we’re talking about STEAM+ where the subjects and teaching philosophy are directly relevant, both academically and vocationally, to the future of Sri Lanka and the world. Imagine a place where you can choose to study A-Level subjects like Marine Science, Travel & Tourism, Digital Media Design, Psychology, Drama or Textiles along with Maths, Economics, Humanities and Sciences. Imagine having that kind of access to subjects that are directly relevant, that young people are genuinely passionate about, and that can help them take charge and build their own world. That’s what we offer at Brightly College.”

In addition to offering a wide range of 20+ Cambridge A-Level subjects, a globally applicable life-skills programme for all students will inspire vital personal qualities like creativity, innovation, critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership and empathy.

“Brightly aims to challenge students to explore the world through diverse cultures, science, nature and languages, as much as with technology and the arts. We believe that true education is the act of inspiring active learning, and the key to unlocking the innovative capacity of young minds is engaging curiosity.”

Students can opt to study at Brightly College on a full-time or part-time basis. During the morning session, Brightly College will offer more traditional subjects (eg: Maths, Science and Commerce), while focusing on the new curriculum in the afternoon. This provides students with the flexibility either to join Brightly College full-time, or remain at their present school, and then come to Brightly for an additional subject or two during the afternoon.

Benefiting from a stimulating learning experience, students at Brightly College will also be guided in developing a truly effective command of both spoken and written English, along with their mother tongue. Brightly College is the ideal foundation-building platform for A-Level students who seek to pursue their higher education abroad or here in Sri Lanka, and personalised professional advice on Higher Education and Careers opportunities will be given to students and their parents.

Brightly College invites all students and parents to visit the institution for a one-on-one transformational meeting with the Founding Principal, Andrew Fowler-Watt.
